In that one slight motion, I see the end of hope, beginning of destruction of everything I hold dear in the world. I can’t guess what form my punishment will take, how wide the net will be cast, but when it is finished there most likely be nothing left. So you would think that at this moment, I would be in utter despair.
Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous.
I’m not scared of hell. I lived a decent life, and I don’t think there is such a place, anyway. I’m scared there’s nothing. There was nothing before, we all know that, so doesn’t it stand to reason that there’s nothing after?
And there lies the horror: the past we remember is devoid of time. Impossible to reexperience a love the way we reread a book or resee a film.
If you have something specific and visible to fear, rather than something that could be anything, it is easier.
